The Guides Company (TGC) is proud to announce an exciting and challenging new venue set in the Selous in Tanzania.

  • The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest faunal reserves in the world, located in the south of Tanzania.
  • The Kilombero and Ruaha rivers in the reserve are home to some of the largest blue tiger fish in Africa, the ferocious (Hydrocynus tanzanea).
  • This extreme and untouched destination is not for the feint hearted and promises to be a mind altering and life changing experience!

Tigerfish are considered as one of the great freshwater game fish. It is a truly magnificent fish to target on a fly rod. Their strength, stamina and fighting ability make them a formidable target and their spectacular leaps into the air will have you repeatedly re-living those moments in your mind. Whilst these trips will predominantly focus on Tigerfish (Hydrocynus tanzanea), these waters however, also host a large number of other challenging and dynamic species including vundu, tilapia, rhino fish as well as some species that are yet to be identified.

Typically, anglers will start their day early accompanied by armed and experienced guides! Some fishing will be done from river banks (may only be accessible on foot), while rapids will also provide exciting angling. Fishing is also done from aluminium boats to fish the larger areas and large inflatable boats for the rapids. The fishing localities are rotated regularly to ensure prevention of excessive fishing pressure.

The season in Tanzania runs from September to October. The temperatures can range from 27ºc to 37ºc.

Living quarters consist of 4 large safari tents with en-suite ablution facilities, including hot and cold water. The in-house Chef will serve a variety of excellent cuisine including dinner and breakfast, with a packed lunch to be enjoyed either in camp or along the river.

The trips are based on 7 nights and 6 and a half days of guided fishing and Anglers must arrive in Dar es Salaam the day before the trip starts. You will spend the night in a hotel in Dar es Salaam where you will be met by a representative from the lodge, welcomed and briefed. The following morning you will depart to the airport and take a charter flight to the nearest airstrip to the lodge. After settling in, you will fish the afternoon session on the river.
